Prior to using the gel stick i had nikon services clean the sensor offered a great while you wait service this involved a round car trip of 3 hours plus the waiting time for cleaning on a good day it would take around 4 hours to do this task.
If the sensor gel stick is too dirty or you have cleaned up oil before then it might be best to use untouched sticky paper.

The gel stick has understandably rounded corners which do not allow one to get all the way to the edges.
But it does work well.

The sensor gel stick is attached firmly on the plastic stick wand and it has a more sticky property so it does a much better job in removing stuff that is stuck on the aa filter in my experience.
Since the sensor gel stick surface is not as sticky as the paper you should not have to worry about picking up stuff from the paper back to the sensor gel stick as long as it is dust and not something like oil.
